Welcome back to Season Two of the San Diego Thursday Night Throwdowns! It's pretty safe to say last season was a success. Four rounds, eight finalists, and one home brew kit later, Season One was in the books and we were left with some amazing pictures, videos and the notion that San Diego was finally tapping into its potential to be a destination for coffee.

But with any competition or event, there are always areas to improve. We took a few months off to evaluate our performance and see where we could tweak some things. The format is largely the same: four TNTs over four months with baristas earning points at each throwdown. The top eight in terms of points will compete for the grand prizes (which include one-of-a-kind SDCN engraved tamps, courtesy of Reg Barber).

Thanks Reg Barber for the awesome tamps!

The big change we made is to get everyone on the same page with judging. Our goal is to host a fair and balanced competition that motivates baristas to challenge themselves to do better. In that spirit, we have worked with a group of coffee professionals to create a pool of calibrated judges. I would like to share the guide that we provided to them so that any barista competing has access to how the judges are deciding.

We welcome any and all feedback. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please email Matt Barahura at his email listed in the guide.

Good luck to everyone who is planning to compete this season! We're looking forward to having an even more successful and competitive season than last year!
