The long awaited and Eater San Diego listed "Most Anticipated New Restaurant Openings" of Fall 2016, Pop Pie Co., soft opened to enthusiastic crowds earlier this month and will celebrate their Grand Opening this Saturday October, 8! We stopped in to grab a bite of both their savory and sweet pies as well as to enjoy a coffee or two.

We kicked off our pie experience with their Green Hog & Cheese savory pie with a side of Mashed Potatoes & Gravy and finished with their Coconut Cream Pies, a cortado and their lightly sweetened signature ginger latte. The Green Hog & Cheese was reminiscent of Sunday dinners and Grandma's pork roast, tender and tasty all baked up with love into a buttery crust. The Coconut Cream Pie was a nicely balanced sweet treat with real coconut and paired nicely with a cortado, but would have been just as lovely with a shot of espresso or pour over. As an added bonuses, if your sweet tooth wants a little more love, we encourage you to try the ginger latte poured into lovely espresso parts blue porcelain; a pop of color contrasting well with the latte's copper crema. But do ask what other signature espresso drinks they're offering. With a talented team of baristas, they'll be happy to talk coffee with you to help you decide what you'd like.

Their savory pies and sides are americana comfort food at its best using high quality ingredients. Their pastry chef prepared sweet pies, hand crafted by Co-Owner Chef Gan, are a perfect pairing for the craft coffee they're slinging. Co-Owner, Steven Torres, conveyed that they're offering something a little different to the community of University Heights by introducing espresso and single origins with lighter roasting profiles. They are using James Coffee's Night Owl Blend on espresso to satisfy the more traditional espresso lovers as well as a few single origins from Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, and Torres plans to offer a multi-roaster approach on their pour over bar.
