Coffee Talk with Modern Times

Flashback Friday to January's Roast of the Month by Modern Times. We met up with Amy Krone, roastmaster and designer for Modern Times to talk about their Black House Blend, and their journey from craft beer to craft coffee.

Modern Times has drawn the attention of Roast Magazine, earning accolades for being a brewery that is also a serious roastery.

"At the intersection of beer and coffee, no one we know of is pushing the creative envelope further than Modern Times, the much-loved brewery based in Point Loma, San Diego."

Modern Times selected their Black House Blend for subscribers in January. It is a blend of Ethiopian Hambela (fruit, berries, brightness) and Sumatra Mandehling (cocoa, caramel, earth), and scored a 94 on Coffee Review. This blend is the same one used in their oatmeal coffee stout.  Modern Times recommends it be enjoyed as a pour over or cold press.

Also included in January's little brown box of local coffee love was a 4 oz. sample of their first Direct Trade coffee--Brazil Sitio Da Torre. Think delicious dark fruit with a milk chocolate finish.

We had the special pleasure of getting to taste Their Heavy Winter Blend (available with their other coffees online). For this special blend, Modern Times uses two different Ethiopian coffees (a Yirg and Sidamo), a Guatemala, and a game changer; a Bourbon Barrel-Aged Tanzania Peaberry. It is pure coffee drinking pleasure.

Without further fuss, we hope you'll enjoy this bonus podcast with Modern Times and you'll pop in and tell them we sent you. Until next time, happy coffeeing!
