Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, Little Italy opened its doors to the local coffee community for the first SDTNT of 2017. Jeff Taylor, his wife Maritza & the Bird Rock Coffee team were gracious hosts. We want to thank them for providing coffee beans, prizes and labor to make this event a reality!
Former SDCN Editor, Pablo Lara, lovingly introduced the new SDCN Team for the 2017/19 term. The team includes two Co-Directors. Matt Eaton and Kat Adams joined by Community Representatives Nyah Rodrígez and Max Dimitrov. Together they will put on Latte Throwdowns across the city and collaborate to foster coffee community events.
A solid competition bracket, made up of 64 participants, showing the enthusiasm of our local baristas. The best pours were selected by the three judges of the night. From Bird Rock Coffee Roasters we had Jacob White, Quality Control Manager. Jacob has been in the coffee industry for 5 years and already has won multiple seasons of SDTNT’s. Most recently, Jacob placed third in this year’s US Brewers Cup! From Das Cortez in Tijuana we had Andrea Hernandez, Quality Control & Logistics Manager. She has worked in the industry for three years, in addition to being a graphic designer for 7 years. Her portfolio includes designing logos for roasters such as Electric Coffee Roasters in Tijuana. Gracing the judge’s panel with her unforgettable smile was Adriana Uriostegui. As Cafe Manager for Cafe Moto’s tasting room she has lead tasting events and training. Adriana is SCA Level 2 certified and won a SDTNT.
The two beautiful turquoise Synessos cranked out rounds of amazing pours. Participants came from Ensenada, Tijuana, San Diego & Los Angeles showing the diversity and size of our local community. Brandon M & Kyle Tenery dueled for the first place. As nerve-wracking as this all sounds the two finalists managed to keep a relaxed atmosphere.
