For the third SDTNT of 2017, record numbers showed up to compete and network at Communal Coffee in North Park. There was a donut wall, beer from modern times, plants and flowers for as far as the eye could see.
Tyler Wells, formerly of Handsome Coffee Roasters and currently of Nice Coffee Bar in Los Angeles was our entertaining emcee for the evening.
Filling up a 64 person bracket has become the new normal for #SDTNT, and the talented and gracious baristas of Communal kept the shots going all night long for everyone’s latte art! Baristas from as far as Los Angeles and Tijuana came out for an evening of fun competition.
Some of the best prizes yet would be awarded to the top latte artists. Barista Magazine sponsored yearlong subscriptions and awesome hats, Augie’s Coffee came through with coffee and beer koozies, Aerobie sponsored an Aeropress, Communal provided glasses, mugs, and pins, and Communal’s roaster Sightglass Coffee from San Francisco brought tote bags, patches, and coffee!
Our judges for the evening of tight competition were Jason Serres from Bean Bar, Blair Smith from Augie's Coffee in Redlands, and Siri Simran from Lofty Coffee Co. The 64 baristas poured some of their best art and made these judges work through many difficult decisions!
In the end, Xana Young from Bird Rock Coffee Roasters won first place, Marco Aceves from Container Coffee Roaster Co got 2nd place, and James Davalos from The Aussie Bean got third place.
We are so grateful to Jen Byard and her team at Communal Coffee for providing their gorgeous space, talent, and energy for the local coffee community!
